Love your Horse
We know you love your horses!
That’s why we dedicate the following piece – I Ride* – to all those who love, laugh and live to ride. Enjoy!
I Ride
I ride. That seems like such a simple statement. However as many women
who ride know it is really a complicated matter. It has to do with power
and empowerment. Being able to do things you might have once considered
out of reach or ability. I have considered this as I shovel manure, fill
water barrels in the cold rain, wait for the vet/farrier/electrician/hay
delivery, change a tire on a horse trailer by the side of the freeway,
or cool a gelding out before getting down to the business of drinking a
cold beer after a long ride.
The time, the money, the effort it takes to ride calls for dedication.
At least I call it dedication. Both my ex-husbands call it 'the
sickness'. It's a sickness I've had since I was a small girl
bouncing my model horses and dreaming of the day I would ride a real
horse. Most of the women I ride with understand the meaning of 'the
sickness'. It's not a sport. It's not a hobby. It's what we do
and, in some ways, who we are as women and human beings.
I ride. I hook up my trailer and load my gelding. I haul to some
trailhead somewhere, unload, saddle, whistle up my dog and I ride. I
breathe in the air, watch the sunlight filter through the trees and
savor the movement of my horse. My shoulders relax. A smile rides my
sunscreen smeared face. I pull my ball cap down and let the real world
fade into the tracks my horse leaves in the dust.
Time slows Flying insects buzz loudly, looking like fairies. My
gelding flicks his ears and moves down the trail. I can smell his sweat
and it is perfume to my senses. Time slows. The rhythm of the walk and
the movement of the leaves become my focus. My saddle creaks and the
leather rein in my hand softens with the warmth.
I consider the simple statement; I ride. I think of all I do because I
ride. Climb granite slabs, wade into a freezing lake, race a friend
through the manzanita all the while laughing and feeling my heart in my
chest. Other days just the act of mounting and dismounting can be a
real accomplishment. Still I ride, no matter how tired or how much my
seat bones or any of the numerous horse related injuries hurt. I ride.
And I feel better for doing so.
The beauty I've seen because I ride amazes me. I've ridden out to
find lakes that remain for the most part, unseen. Caves, dark and cold
beside rivers full and rolling are the scenes I see in my dreams. The
Granite Stairway at Echo Summit, bald eagles on the wing and bobcats on
the prowl add to the empowerment and joy in my heart.
I think of the people, mostly women, I've met. I consider how
competent they all are. Not a weenie amongst the bunch. We haul 40ft
rigs, we back into tight spaces without clipping a tree. We set up camp.
Tend the horses. We cook and keep safe. We understand and love our
companions, the horse. We respect each other and those we encounter on
the trail. We know that if you are out there riding, you also shovel,
fill, wait and doctor. Your hands are a little rough and you travel with
out makeup or hair gel. You do without to afford the 'sickness' and
probably, when you were a small girl, you bounced a model horse while
you dreamed of riding a real one. Now you’re there….ride.
If you love to ride -- stock your saddle bags with a good supply of Omega Nibblers® for your horse. They’re the best tasting treats and the best in nutrition too. Buy Omega Nibblers® for your horse for Valentine’s Day and be ready for a big wet kiss!

Love Your Dog
Happy dogs are healthy, alert, vibrant, and enthusiastic about living. Although happy to lie at our feet and snooze, most pets are ready for exercise of any kind the minute we give the signal. Get active with your pet for their good health and improve your good health in the process. Now that’s a win/win situation!
Assessing your dog's health will soon become very natural for you once you understand his normal behavior and recognize any changes from the norm. Dogs are creatures of habit. If you notice your dog does not get up, seems reluctant to play, moves slower, eats less or behaves in an abnormal way, you should check with your vet right away.
Do a weekly snout to tail examination when you groom your pet. There should be no unpleasant odors or discharge from the eyes, ears, nose or mouth. Get your dogs used to this exam by placing them as young puppies of eight weeks on a rubber bath mat up on top of a table, etc. Handle them every week until this becomes a natural part of their grooming routine.
Be watchful for:
- Eyes -- A dog's eyes should be bright and clear, no redness and free of any discharge.
- Ears -- The insides of the ears should be a dull pink and free of odor. Occasional head shaking is normal, especially when a dog first wakes up, but excessive head shaking might indicate some irritation in the ears.
- Mouth -- Dogs' teeth should be white and free from tartar. The gums and tongue should be pink; however, there may be some mottle of black pigment in certain breeds. There should not be bad breath.
- Paws -- Paws should be neat and clean with no broken nails. The pads should be soft and healthy looking with no cuts. The pads should not be swollen, causing painful walking or tenderness when limbs are touched.
- Skin -- Normal coat is healthy and shiny with the skin clean and no dry flakes or odor. Healthy fur glistens and shouldn't come out in big hunks when pulled except during the dogs natural molting. There should be no sign of parasites, flea dirt, dandruff, sores, signs of baldness, or itchy skin.
- Joints -- Your dog should move with a natural grace, showing no signs of difficulty getting up or down.
- Digestion -- Appetite and thirst and frequency of emptying the bowels and bladder should be routine. If you notice a change in the color, consistency or quantity of droppings, it's best to check with your vet.
When a dog is not well, he relies on his owner to notice and take appropriate action. Become familiar with his routine so he can continue to stay happy and healthy, tearing through your house, playing keep away, and loving you just the way you are.
A very convenient and safe way to ensure that the four-legged love of your life is a happy, healthy, alert, vibrant, and enthusiastic dog -- is to sprinkle Omega Canine Shine over the food every day. The high oil content really helps the powdered supplement stick nicely to the food bits. One-year shelf life – GUARANTEED. What an excellent Valentine’s Day gift of good health for your best four-legged companion!

Love Yourself and Your Family
If you or your family have tried every lotion and potion on the market hoping to have beautiful SKIN, thick, shiny HAIR, a dynamite SMILE, and a lean STOMACH you may be going at it all wrong. The truth is - eating the right foods can help you not only feel great but look fabulous too. Here's nutritionist Joy Bauer's prescription for beauty -- being (and feeling) beautiful begins within.
For fabulous SKIN,
eat foods rich in Beta Carotene, Vitamin C, E and Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids: |
Beta Carotene helps maintain epithelial tissue and acts as antioxidant. Therefore, it can help to prevent premature wrinkling. Beta carotene is found in deep orange fruits and vegetables like sweet potato, carrots, mango and apricots.
Vitamin C is involved in the production of collagen, the "glue" that holds the body's cells together – skin included. Deficiencies can cause bruising, loss of skin elasticity, and poor healing of cuts and scrapes. And like beta carotene, Vitamin C acts as antioxidant.
Good sources include red peppers, oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, and broccoli.
Vitamin E Acts as a potent anti-oxidant – preserving healthy skin cells from free radicals. Good sources include wheat germ, almonds, peanut butter and avocado
Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids helps maintain the integrity of cell membranes. Foods include flax seeds*, fatty fish like salmon and sardines, Omega 3 fortified eggs, and walnuts. |
| |
| For healthy HAIR, eat foods high in Iron rich protein and B- vitamins. |
Iron-Rich Protein Iron delivers oxygen to cells all over the body – including hair follicles. Foods include red meat, turkey, oysters, lentils and eggs.
B-Vitamins: (B6, B12 and folate) Involved in building red blood cells… and helps to circulate oxygen. This improves the physical properties – elasticity, strength and gloss of the hair shaft. |
| |
| For a dynamite SMILE -- healthy gums, sweet breath and strong teeth, do the following: |
- Get adequate calcium and vitamin D
- Drink plenty of water (water helps wash away food particles and keeps gums healthy.
Also, most tap water supplies fluoride)
- Chew sugarless gum (helps keep your mouth moist and remove food debris)
- Drink green or black tea (helps combat bad breath and also contains fluoride).
- When possible, drink beverages through a straw (to bypass your teeth).
|
| For a lean, bloat-free STOMACH, follow this guide: |
AVOID
- Excessive carbonated Beverages
- CARB and FAT Heavy Meals
- SALTY Foods
- Excessive SUGAR ALCOHOLS
- Very High FIBER Foods
INCLUDE
- Drink lots of flat water
- Make PROTEIN the star of each meal
- Spread low-volume meals throughout the day (every 4-5 hours)

Sharing a bit more on those essential Omega-3s -- both the American Heart Association and the FDA are in support of Omega-3s. Omega-3s are gaining popularity with mainstream acceptance as well. According to a HealthFocus USA Trend Survey, four in every 10 U.S. adults want more Omega-3s in their food to help prevent heart and cancer problems and cognitive decline. You can find Omega-3s added to foods found on your local grocery shelves-- orange juice, yogurt, healthy butter-like spreads, milk, breads, cereals, and even popcorn – just to name a few.
However, some nutritionists note that foods with naturally occurring omega-3s are still healthier than foods with the fatty acid simply added to them. Registered dietitian Robyn Flipse said, "It isn't good nutrition to cram a lot of ingredients into a single food."
Bottom Line: One of the most convenient ways to get the benefits of naturally occurring, Omega-3s is to supplement your diet, and your family’s diets, with Omega Fields’ whole-food stabilized ground flax supplements -- Mega Omega® or Simply Omega-3. Mix in a fruit smoothie, hot or cold cereal, cottage cheese, juice of your choice, yogurt or pudding, ice cream, or whatever it is that is going to work for you and your family on a daily basis. You can also use them in baking and cooking. They contain the best tasting, stabilized ground flax seed on the market. FAQ
QUESTION:
I'm interested in giving my horse your flax product. However, she is overweight. We've been trying to get her to lose weight. I'm concerned about buying your product because of the high fat content. Your flax product is very high in fat even if it is omega 3's. Can you enlighten me, or tell me that I am correct in my concern? Thank you, R.Gordon
ANSWER:
Thank you for your email and your interest in our award-winning stabilized ground flax supplement for horses -- Omega Horseshine. Please allow me to provide a bit of a primer on Omega Horseshine and the Omega 3 essential fatty acids.
Omega Horseshine contains the best premium, stabilized ground flax (we contract with flax growers in northern Canada -- flax grown there contains more Omega-3!) enhanced with a very small percentage (under 3%) of oats (antioxidant), yeast (probiotic), vitamins, minerals, and biotin. The ingredients in this small percentage of the Omega Horseshine formula are meant to enhance the nutritional benefits of the flax and the conversion rate of the Omega-3's in the body, but are no way meant to be the recommended daily amounts. Omega Horseshine is the ideal Omega-3 ground flax supplement and it is the only flax based horse supplement on the market that has a 12 month freshness guarantee! One-half cup to one cup is the recommended daily maintenance amount for Omega Horseshine (approximately 100 servings in a 20 lb bag and 250 servings in a 50 lb. bag).
Trouble with dry scaly itchy skin, joint pain, poor hoof growth, allergies, etc -- all these conditions may indicate a deficiency of Omega-3 essential fatty acids in the diet. The stabilized ground flax used in Omega Horseshine is very high in Omega-3 essential fatty acids (flax is the richest source of Omega-3 in the plant world). This makes it ideal because it is heavily tipped in favor of the Omega-3s your horse's diet is missing. Also essential fatty acids are the first fats that are used by the body because they are essential to the working of the body -- the outer layer of every cell in the body is made up of essential fatty acids. Since they are the first fats utilized -- they do not get stored as body fat. When the body has proper functional nutrition, in the right balance -- the level of optimal health improves.
If you have any further questions or concerns please email or phone me at 1-800-962-9536 ext 105.
When you order Omega Horseshine, may we suggest you also consider ordering a 5 lb pouch or 15 lb box of Omega Nibblers treats (most flax/Omega-3 of any on the market) for your horses. Customers tell us they are wonderful for training or trail riding -- and the horses love them! And don't forget Omega Nuggets -- tasty flax-rich treats for your dogs!

Words to Ponder:
The Magic of Love
Love is like magic
And it always will be.
For love still remains
Life's sweet mystery!!
Love works in ways
That are wondrous and strange
And there's nothing in life
That love cannot change!!
Love can transform
The most commonplace
Into beauty and splendor
And sweetness and grace.
Love is unselfish,
Understanding and kind,
For it sees with its heart
And not with its mind!!
Love is the answer
That everyone seeks...
Love is the language,
That every heart speaks.
Love can't be bought,
It is priceless and free,
Love, like pure magic,
Is life's sweet mystery!!
