Dr. Kris’ Korner!

Dr. Kris Hiney

Greetings again fellow horse owners!

This month, in the article, “COPPER & ZINC: THEIR IMPORTANCE TO YOUR HORSE", we will discuss two important trace minerals, copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn).  We will discuss them together, as they are most commonly discussed in relation to developmental orthopedic diseases in young horses.  First of all, copper and zinc are classified as trace minerals because they are required in far less quantities compared to Ca, P, Na, Cl etc. While the minerals we previously discussed were described in terms of percentages of the diet, or in grams, trace minerals are only required in mg per day.  Typically their requirements are listed in ppm (or mg/kg) of the total diet.   It is then assumed that a horse would be consuming a standard 2% of their body weight per day.  Thus if a requirement is listed as 15 ppm, then a 500kg  horse should consume 150 mg per day.  Now let’s discuss what these particular trace minerals do for your horse.

Spring Tips!
By Dr. Kris Hiney

Tips - pic for vaccination.jpg• If you use electric fences, check your chargers.  As the grass begins to grow, the temptation to leave the fenced in area for greener pastures may intensify.

• Check all of your fences for winter damage.  Freezing and thawing of the ground can cause posts to “heave”.  This may result in downed rails, loose mesh or high tensile fences no longer having high tension.  Be sure to re-stretch any fences that may have become loose as these are actually extremely dangerous.  Horses may tangle themselves quite easily in loose wires

ALL THE DUCKS ARE RICHARD AND ALL THE HENS ARE GLADYS: Or the Importance of Being Named

When you have as many animals in the public eye as I do, the naming of animals becomes of the utmost importance.

You can’t be on a set and say “Hey, Fluff! Sit…Stay!”  It is only fair to name animals with some dignity. Not only does it color how you feel about the animal but I believe it also effects how the animal feels about himself.

Take for instance, chickens.  When I was training chickens for commercials for Gold’n’Plump, a regional brand in the Midwest, I would have as many as 20 white hens at a time. I could not name each one individually; I could hardly tell them apart as it was, so it was easier to name them all Gladys.
