Understanding Protein Nutrition
Part 2, “Protein Quality—It’s More than just Digestibility”
Greetings again fellow horse owners!
In the last article, we introduced the idea of examining the protein in our horse’s diet beyond just the mere percent crude protein on the feed tag or a forage report. We discussed the concept of protein digestibility and the importance of the site of digestion. As there is only limited evidence that uptake of amino acids takes place in the hind gut of the horse, we prefer to feed proteins which are digested and absorbed in the small intestine of the horse. Typically concentrates offer more pre-cecal digestibility of protein than do forages. Therefore site and extent of digestion are key components of protein quality. However, there is another equally important factor in protein quality, and that is the amino acid profile.

RIGHT WHERE WE BELONG
Sometimes we get lucky in life and end up right where we belong.
It all began in early spring of 2002. I, my husband Kevin, and our four sons had been living in my hometown of South St. Paul, Minnesota, for the previous ten years. We both had our work and the kids were more or less happy in school. We had moved there from our small farm in Hastings, Minnesota to be closer to Kevin’s job and our extended family. I loved our little rambler in town but as the traffic grew on our suburban street and it became unsafe for my youngest to play in the front yard, I began to yearn for a place in the country to call our own.

Omega Fields® Presents Equine Protein
Requirements, Dr. Kristina Hiney’s New
Health Series
Newton, WI, September 14, 2010 – Kristina Hiney, PhD, Omega Fields® Equine Nutrition Advisor, has begun a new series focused on protein requirements for our horses, and the various feeds which provide protein. The first installment, “Protein Digestion in the Horse”, was released recently in an Omega Fields’ Health-E-Letter, a monthly newsletter by the flaxseed-based nutritional supplement company.
“Protein is commonly the first concern of many horsemen when selecting their feeds, and the most frequently discussed,” Dr. Hiney states in her opening paragraph. “In the equine industry, there tends to be a common fallacy that if a product costs more, it clearly is a more desirable product to feed. As feedstuffs which contain more protein are often more costly, this tends to make higher protein feeds more attractive to the consumer. However, that higher protein content may not be necessary to feed to your horse!” (read more)

Omega Fields® Presents Equine Fall Tips
Newton, WI, September 27, 2010, Dr. Kristina Hiney, PhD, Omega Fields® Equine Nutrition Advisor, has prepared a series of Seasonal Tips which can be of great help to the horse owner transitioning their horses from one season to another.
Omega Fields® recognizes that your horse’s health is always of paramount importance but the many things to consider and keep in mind can make this task overwhelming. To simplify, we’ve asked Dr. Hiney to split up annual health considerations into the four seasons. Following are the things you should do during this summer-to-fall transition:
Check the body condition score of all your horses, especially the older ones. Extra pounds will aid them in getting through the winter if you live in a cold environment. (read more) |

Egg on Editor's Face
In last month's Health-E-Letter we incorrectly reported that Corrie Land and Janice Fineman, our two First Place winners in the Omega Fields' Shine On! Video Contest, would receive their choice of prizes, including a "12 month supply of Omega Horseshine®" -- that should have been a "3 month supply" of Omega Horseshine®.
Additionally, all winners will also receive a 3.5 lb pouch of Omega Nibblers, rather than the incorrectly stated "Omega Nuggets."
Finally, we shortened the comments from our Grand Prize Winner, Brooke Pape, to fit better in the newsletter, and inadvertently omitted the comments of our other winners. However, the complete text of all comments is on our website. Click here to read it all.
Our apologies for these errors.
